It’s a classic Washington coast beach with massive driftwood piles, mighty sea stacks, and many colorful tidepools. It’s also just a couple of Olympic National Park beaches that you can access during high tide. So don’t expect to have this beach all to yourself,  especially during high season. There’s a reason so many sing the praises of Ruby Beach, and it’s well worth stopping for, even if you have to share the shoreline. Beach 1 is located in the Kalaloch area of Olympic National Park, just off of the scenic Highway 101. There is a short and easy trail down to the beach. dog grooming near me
Whether you live in the Pacific Northwest or fly into Seattle, you need a car to get around Olympic National Park. Therefore, I recommend visiting Olympic National Park in late  May through June and September through October. These months are considered shoulder seasons, so there are fewer crowds and decent accommodation rates .
It has a restaurant overlooking the lake which serves casual American fare. The resort also has a lakeside deli that offers fresh “grab-and-go” items. Make your way on the path that bends around the trees to reveal a stunning 60 ft. waterfall.

There are also some teeming tidepools, but you will have to walk a ways to reach them. Kalaloch Beach is one of the best Olympic Park beaches and is between the four other Kalaloch Beaches. Aside from its convenient location off of Highway 101, it also offers extensive sandy shores, tons of trails, a campground, and even a lodge. Unsurprisingly, Kalaloch Beach is extremely popular. The Hoh is home to some of North America’s giants.
This hike ends at an overlook where you have a great view of Mount Angeles. Park in the lot at the end of Hurricane Ridge Road. DO NOT park near the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center. Sydney Olympic Park Town Centre has over 300 accessible and mobility car parking spaces for people with disabilities. The inn has become a must-stop for fans as a home base for visits to the high school, hospital, Bella’s house, and Olympic National Park’s rainforests.

Next up, head to Lake Crescent, a glacial lake with pristine blue waters surrounded by evergreens and wildflower meadows. Have a picnic at Bovee’s Meadow or grab some food at the Log Cabin Resort on a nice day. Any supplies you need you can find at Fairholme General Store. Even the most active travellers could easily spend a week in Olympic National Park without getting bored. But if you don’t have quite that much time, don’t worry.

Although Olympic National Park restricts the areas where dogs are allowed, there are plenty of dog friendly activities on the Olympic Peninsula. There are plenty of wonderful hiking trails for all levels of fitness at and near Hurricane Ridge. Yes, Hurricane Ridge Road is open Friday through Sunday plus holiday Mondays during the winter season. See the  Hurricane Ridge Road section above for more details. However, the weather can close the road at any time.
There is another much smaller parking lot at Hurricane Hill, at the end of Hurricane Ridge Road. To get there, continue through the main parking lot and keep going for another 1.5 miles. There are only about 30 parking spots here, which is mostly for the Hurricane Hill Trail. If you only have time for a day trip from Seattle, then this private tour includes pick up and drop off at your hotel.
Most of the dog friendly trails are VERY short and being that Tuna is 40% Border Collie we needed something a little more substantial. This was the perfect spot to burn some energy and gain some lake access for our water-obsessed pup. Its footprint starts at the sea, a long strip of beaches that makes up about a third of the state’s Pacific Ocean waterfront.

There are also numerous spots to pull over and park along Lake Cushman, which offers wonderful swimming opportunities. Be aware, however, that many of the popular swimming spots on Lake Cushman can be extremely crowded on sunny summer days. Northwest of the Visitor Center parking lot is a quick, relatively easy trail where you and your dog can hike and stretch your legs.
