Their dine-in menu has the Umegae Mochi teamed up with coffee or Japanese tea. We would recommend giving their Ume-cha a try as the type of tea is special to the region. At the back of the store, the small garden has Dazaifu’s symbol planted, plum blossoms, which brighten up the café with their gorgeous flowers from late winter to early spring. The café was designed by Tokyo University’s professor, Kuma Kengo (隈研吾).

Going to Japan to study animation puts you right in the middle of a culture that has been in existence for over a hundred years and continues to grow and evolve into a trillion-yen industry. The first popular Japanese animation, popularly known as Anime, I ever watched was Dragon Balls but it was too noisy so I stopped watching it. Years later, my friend was finally able to convince me to watch Naruto and I fell in love from the first episode. One month later, I had watched all 720 episodes of Naruto and Naruto Shippuden. In 730, the second year of the Tenpyō era, prolific poet and head of the Dazaifu government Otomo no Tabito chose this beautiful location in which to hold a poetry recital event known as the “Plum Blossom Party”. With a focus on passing the entry test into prestigious schools, a private ‘Cram School’ uses a mimetic approach.

A direct path to the museum has been constructed at the southeastern end of the shrine grounds. Between the pond and the main hall stands the Dazaifu Tenmangu Museum, which houses and displays many of the shrine's treasures. And behind the main hall is the small Kanko Historical Museum, 都府楼 個別指導塾 which displays the main events in the life of Michizane in small dioramas. Although the signs are written in Japanese, an English pamphlet is available that has explanations for each scene. Daizafu Tenmangu's main hall is undergoing major renovations from May 2023 until around 2026.
There were other tourists watching as well as my class, but most people would have either been there by invitation or booked a Dazaifu tour through the Fukuoka or Kyushu tour companies. As our cruise ship arrived in Fukuoka, Japan, our first destination was the revered Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, a place of profound cultural and spiritual significance. It serves as one of the primary shrines dedicated to Tenjin deified form of Michizane.

Mt Homan (宝満山) – Long ago, this hiking route was the place for ascetic practices of the Shugendo (修験道/mountain worship) due to its tranquility. Today, it is popular pilgrimage route among locals praying to find the right partner in life. The route itself starts from Kamado Shrine (Kamado-jinja/竈門神社) at the foot of the mountain and ends with a breathtaking view of Dazaifu at the mountain’s summit . Kanzeonji (観世音寺) – Former centre of Buddhism in Kyushu, this temple was founded by Emperor Tenji (天智天皇) during the 7th century in honour of his late mother, the Empress Saimei (斉明天皇). It was one of the only three temples that contain an ordination hall during its time; and also the major temple of Dazaifu.

This is why it is not uncommon for children to start preschool by the time they are around 2.5 to 3 years. Hidden behind Dazaifu's Tenmangu Shrine, an amusement park, and the Kyushu National Museum is a lesser-known tourist site where men train their special art everyday to the point of brutal exhaustion. There are many things to do in Fukuoka and one of them is to take a day trip to Dazaifu. It is one of the best Fukuoka day trips and it is only 24 minutes away from the city. I highly recommend seeing the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and also treating yourself to a unique tofu kaiseki meal at Ume no Hana. A Dazaifu day trip is one of the most popular day trips from Fukuoka City.
