2024 commemorated the 10th year of consecutive participation for Western. The theme for the Mardi Gras was ‘Our Future’, and Western Sydney University partnered this theme with our own, “Beyond the Rainbow”. Creative workshops with STEAMpop took place and as members of “Western Sydney University, Building our Future Together”, we marched. We are all collectively building our futures together at Western and we celebrate the diversity within the LGBTIQ community.

The event that kicks off the whole spectacular is the family-friendly Fair Day in Victoria Park. It’s a free event for the entire community, an opportunity to get together, enjoy some entertainment and have fun in the park over summer – kind of like a school sports day but a lot more fun! The Parade starts in Hyde Park, marches along Oxford Street,  and then continues to Moore Park. On the night before, volunteers will put stands and barriers up along the parade route, keeping a clear distance between spectators and the parade participants. By the time the parade arrived at Hyde Park, the police made the first arrests, which continued as more people joined the protest.

To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Mardi Gras, in 2013 the City of Sydney installed a temporary rainbow crossing on Oxford Street. The new rainbow crossing on Campbell and Bourke streets is now a lasting symbol of the history and contemporary culture of the LGBTIQ communities in its heartland of Oxford Street and surrounds. In 2023, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and Sydney WorldPride united to present a truly global LGBTQIA+SB pride festival. Throughout the late ‘90s and early part of this century, Mardi Gras continued to grow in tourist and spectator numbers along with an increase in  the quality of the events and the scope of the festival. Its themes each year represent the issues of the day and encourage marginalised groups to join a larger family of supporters. As 11pm approached, a throng of people – some walking, some dancing, a few even skipping – marched down towards Hyde Park. Chants of “Out of the bars and into the streets” joined the sound of gay liberation anthems ‘Glad to be Gay’ and ‘Ode to a Gym Teacher’. A small sound system and some banners were on the back of a single flat-bed truck driven by Lance Gowland.
