This could be because they’re not aware they can access accommodations to get them to a more equitable level with their peers, they may have had a previous poor experience, or they may be afraid it will harm their career prospects.

However, for some people the variation between those strengths and challenges is more pronounced and a neurodiversity condition may be present. The PSW service supports doctors in training to recognise if they may have any neurodiversity condition which may be impacting on areas of their training and provides coping strategies to overcome these and give them the best Neurodiversity Assessment chance to succeed. All health and social care staff have access to Autism Wales’ interesting and practical training, giving the knowledge people need to effectively provide support to autistic people. Professionals note a rising demand for neurodivergence services, driven by heightened awareness, especially through social media. A notable study indicated a significant surge in autism diagnoses, correlating with increased awareness prompting more diagnostic assessments. As autism can present in a similar way to other conditions, our trained clinicians will be able to distinguish between those and autism itself, thus better able to ensure the outcome of an accurate diagnosis. The assessment process consists of online questionnaires and meetings via video-link. If a neurodivergent employee considers their condition a disability, it is protected under the Equality Act 2010. Employers must ensure they are not disadvantaged and provide reasonable adjustments.

The resources within this section were developed in partnership with neurodivergent people, parents/ carers, and professionals. The resources are aimed at increasing the knowledge, skills, and understanding of neurodivergence for young people and adult health and social care professionals. At AP Cymru, we are proud that our charity provides a direct support service to neurodivergent children, young people, and their families before, during and after diagnosis. We offer a range of services, such as parent support and wellbeing check ins, family activities and parent/carer wellbeing sessions, and neurodiversity training.

Cygnet is a programme for parents and carers of children and young people aged 5 to 18 who have been diagnosed with an autistic spectrum condition (ASC). I hope this new listening line will help to deliver meaningful improvements to the lives of neurodivergent people and their families, and become a valued source of support. Our sessions raise understanding of different neurotypes and offer practical strategies to create inclusive, supportive environments where neurodivergent individuals can thrive. There is a significantly higher proportion of people with autism who suffer with their mental wellbeing compared to the general/ neurotypical population. Although Autism itself does not cause mental health problems, living in a world that is not user friendly towards you can result in a tough and draining life with the need for support. Once a person is diagnosed with autism, support and better understanding can be given to guide them to engage better with others, should they choose to do so.
