One of the key things to consider when researching an exhaust is that they will fall into two main categories, a full exhaust system and a slip-on exhaust. The difference between the two is that the full exhaust system will connect to the head of the engine and the slip-on will connect to the point where your OEM silencer was previously connected to before being removed. When I last looked , the law was uselessly subjective - language along the lines of "should not be excessively loud". Especially when manufacturers like Ferrari can deliver cars that are extremely loud from the factory (even with the half hearted valve systems  that make them slightly quieter at lower revs, when the thing is quieter anyway!). In any case, I think you'd be very very very unlucky to be pulled on that if you were using a replacement exhaust that a) retained all emissions control requirement, and b) wasn't unsociably loud (and who wants that anyway?). Require Type Appoval by the manufacturer to confirm that they meet current applicable legislation any modification can invalidate that Type approval .
