Ranking the Funniest Football Moments of all time

That was the moment, for me, that Mariners baseball got fun again. The Chiefs went on to win the overtime coin toss and drove down to score a touchdown, winning the game without the Bills touching the ball. A couple of months later, the league changed the overtime rules for the playoffs to ensure that both teams get to touch the ball at least once. While neither of these teams made it to the Super Bowl, this game literally changed the sport—and raised the bar for quarterbacking. To forget all that mediocrity on the field, we decided to focus on the many tremendously funny moments of the 2015 season.
I mean yeah he did score that stunning goal against Belgium, but really he didn’t actually do that much in an England shirt. But he was involved in one of the most ridiculous footballing moments of all time, although in a way I’m pretty sure he wishes he wasn’t. Football is a beautiful game, with its intricacies of strategy, athleticism, and unpredictability.

Despite being shaken up and facing second-and-20, Duggan did his best “Greg Jennings” impression and slipped by some blitzing defenders in the pocket to break a 40-yard tightrope run down the sideline. On the next play, he surged up the middle and hurled himself into the end zone for a touchdown, capping off an 80-yard drive, of which Duggan accounted for all but 5 yards. Did it make me feel any better when head coach Shaheen Holloway’s brass-balled team also toppled Murray State and Purdue to advance in the bracket? The reality is that I—like every other fan of Kentucky, Murray State, or Purdue—had to serve as a sad character within this glorious story. We were a necessary sacrifice upon the altar of the feel-good March Madness narrative, and this one had the makings of an all-timer.
What adds to the moment is the penalty-taker's exaltation at scoring, even though he has just produced such a dismal penalty. Stjarnan FC have slowly gained notoriety by choreographing some of the best goal celebrations ever. That is until Nani selfishly tries to claim the goal himself from all of half-an-inch out. Sadly, he is ruled offside and, naturally, Ronaldo goes berserk. This slide aims to capture 15 moments where the television audience or live support would have momentarily forgotten their bias and burst out laughing.
The official in question is Sergei Shmolik, the referee who officiated England’s 6-0 win over Luxembourg at Wembley back in 1999 and one who was voted as Belarus’ finest in 2007. But there was nothing decent about his behaviour here. According to reports, the referee spent much of the game staggering around the centre circle, failing to keep up with play, and refusing to issue any cards whatsoever, despite some tasty tackles. Football really does not seem so important when compared to life and death. Just when you think you have seen everything another moment comes along  that makes you shake your head in disbelief. Before the final game of the season, a Bills fan decided to jump on and break a table that was set on fire.

It takes a special sort of person to instigate a riot at a football match and Emmanuel Adebayor is exactly that. During this perilously short cameo - in his final career appearance against United - Steven Gerrard's only involvements were clattering into one of football's nice guys, Juan Mata, and stamping on Ander Herrera. Delia Smith traded her mild-mannered sensibilities to deliver a rousing half time pep talk to the Norwich City players. Most players can only dream of having the power that Rory Delap enjoyed during Stoke City's' reigns of terror in the late 2000s. At the time though, pulling out a tragically over the top celebration for a 2-2 draw against lowly West Brom provided rival fans with plenty of ammunition. The Scot claimed Robin van Persie was lucky to avoid death when Ashley Williams...checks notes...kicked a ball at his head.
OK, so the haircuts were awful, the shorts were short, and the pitches were….well, farmer’s fields. Those early World Cup finals www.youtube.com/shorts/Ne85PrB2c-Y really were a bit special weren’t they? What with girders and politics and the entire competition being hosted within one city.

Of all foreign imports, he has perhaps left some of the more notable memories. For a player who seemed to continually goad opposition fans, he had an uncanny knack of attracting a calamity—to the joy of his many antagonists. From one of the most famous footballers in history, to an obscure Icelandic side. What really blows us away in this clip is the sheer distance he sprints solely to troll Arsenal fans. It is level of commitment we should all strive for in our day to day lives.
I can still marvel at YouTube clips of Bonds’s titanic home runs. And I can still watch Valieva transcend her sport for three tainted minutes and feel as if I’m witnessing true, rare art, even as her Olympic arc encapsulates the conflicted experience of the modern sports fan. With one minute and 54 seconds left in the game, Allen hit Gabe Davis for a 27-yard touchdown to give Buffalo a three-point lead. Luiz is one of the funniest guys in the dressing room. The Brazilian defender has played for several teams, including PSG, Chelsea, and Arsenal.
