Taiwan Spiritual Travels
Shundouchi Homestay (see on Booking / Agoda) is a colorful place right on the coast near Rover Cafe . I’m convinced that the place we eventually settled on, Lanyu Guesthouse (嵐羽民宿, the same sounds and tones as Lanyu , but completely different characters), is the best place to stay on Orchid Island. The only reason I didn’t choose it immediately is because it was listed on AirBnb as full, until we called them and it turned out they had one more unlisted room. You can also see their official site here, but it looked better in real life than on the website. Getting to Kenting involves taking either the High Speed Rail to Zuoying and then the shuttle bus to Kenting. You can also take the regular train to Kaohsiung station, then a bus (2-3 hours) or shared taxi (1.5 hours) to Kenting.
There’s a long stretch of nothing before reaching Langdao Village (朗島部落, Iraralay). It’s easy to miss at first, but just before Lover’s Cave, there’s a thin cave that you can enter and climb through to find A Thread of Sky (一線天), a large crack 台東 伴手禮 推薦 opening up on the other side. You’ll soon notice a well paved path leading off on the right to the coast. There’s nothing else to do in town, but if you’re spending the night, there a small bar called十一鄰Bar and a few simple restaurants.
This was revolutionary for train travel, because it allowed them to run for long periods of time without stopping for maintenance. John Deere is best known for being an inventor in the agricultural space. When the blacksmith noticed he was often making the same repairs to wood and cast-iron plows used by farmers, he began experimenting with more durable plow designs, which he then sold to local farmers. His steel plows exploded in popularity among many farmers, with Deere’s company producing 1,600 plows in 1850. That same year, the company started producing other tools in addition to plows.
For rental, you can see the Orchid Island scooter company phone numbers in my article, or you can try the KKDay 3-day tour that I link to in the article, which includes scooter rental. From Hongtou, you can take cross-island “highway” #81 to reach Yeyin on the east coast in 15 minutes. Halfway there, you can stop for a 30 minute walk (scooters aren’t allowed because the road going up there is to steep) to the Orchid Island Weather Station, which boasts bird’s eye views of the island. The remote south coast is home to the Lanyu Nuclear Waste Storage Facility, a controversial facility that has always been opposed by the local Tao people and was in recent years found to have safety flaws. The north coast is also quite remote, and there you’ll find traditional Langdao Village and several large rock formations.
One is the former residence of Sugamiya Katsutaro, the chief architect and the fishing port. Located next to Xingang Church, it is the only two-story Japanese traditional building in Eastern Taiwan. Suffering significant typhoon damage, the building underwent renovations in 2019, and it is expected to reopen next year. Traditionally, Bunun people spend roughly one third of each year preparing and holding functions for the sacred staple. You’ll get to learn all about the millet calendar and how it shaped daily life in Bunun society. Additionally, Kaiana is working to preserve local knowledge of other traditional plants.
Visit the complex today and you’ll find a sprawling campus with a cavernous welcome centre, three museums, a restaurant, gift shop, university and cultural centre. Far from being just a sculpture, the memorial aims to “protect and preserve the culture, tradition, and living heritage of the North American Indians”. She regularly contributes to Cosmopolitan, Woman’s Day, Good Housekeeping, and YouGov, among other publications. When she’s not working, you can find her running, traveling, or scrolling TikTok. Not so much but that is the fascinating thing and especially the atmosphere in the early morning is magic.
They are welcoming, always offer to help, and take the initiative to return an item they have found. Although they are extremely shy, they love talking to foreigners. They could be initially hesitant in speaking, especially if it is in a different language, but once they get comfortable you’ll see how warm they can be.
I recommend Mr. Cow if you’re looking for a place for good food in a relaxed ambiance. Mr. Cow is an Asian Barbecue restaurant located in the Tiehua Music Village. There’s no English menu available at the time so our guide took the liberty of ordering for us.
She was inspired to invent the revolutionary hair care treatment because of her own experience with a condition that caused hair loss. From Thomas Edison, who invented the light bulb, to Joy Mangano, who made it easier for busy parents to keep the house clean, all of these inventors have left their marks on history in their own ways. Although many of these names and products will be familiar to you, there are also engineers, scientists, and mathematicians on this list who you might not know. But that doesn’t mean their contributions to science are any less significant—in fact, many of them formed the basis for later inventions and widespread technologies. I am going to put it on my wish list – if we ever do a tour of Taiwan, when corona virus is well over. It sounds fascinating – I stumbled across it when I came across the Yami language on Youtube and would like to learn more about the culture of the Tao people.
This rocky, tree-lined canyon has a river at the bottom, while its forests shelter different species of animals. The place is also famous for its marbles while its picturesque scenery makes it an excellent hiking site. Should you want to explore its attractions you can check out Shakadang Trail, Yanzikou Trail, and Lushui Trail.
I spent a few good minutes here before heading to bed on our first night in Taitung. The sweet flavor of crispy sugar sweet potato is rich and very smooth but not sticky. They are made in peanut, red bean, mung bean and other flavors, using only natural ingredients and have no artificial flavorings. Beef noodles is one of the best known dishes of Taiwan, is well-known internationally for its unique flavor and is very popular with visitors to Taiwan.
Painstakingly chipping away at the exposed bluff, the aim was to create a striking 172-metre-high image of the great Lakota warrior astride his horse, arm outstretched pointing towards the lands of his people. At the time, 31-year-old Ziolkowski was working on Mount Rushmore, the iconic memorial to four US presidents, which is located in the Lakota’s spiritual heartland, the Black Hills of South Dakota. Standing Bear had already petitioned Mount Rushmore’s lead sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, to include the revered Lakota leader Crazy Horse in the memorial to no avail. Along with Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs was an inventor behind Apple Computers. As the now-famous story goes, Jobs and Wozniak started Apple Computers in Jobs’ family’s garage in 1976, and the work they did there made computers more accessible and more affordable for consumers. Jobs left Apple in 1985, but he returned in 1997 and revitalized the company, leading to the creation of products like the iPod and iPhone.
There are around 5 areas where you can see different types of rocks. It’s really amazing to see how the landscape can be so different, although it’s in the same place. Walk up and down the coast in either direction to enjoy the best views of the bridge. There is a cluster of shops and tourist amenities in the parking lot. You can get here from Taitung City on one of the buses that ply the coast, such as 8101, but the ride will take just over 2 hours .
Today, they are considered as lively hubs of food and shopping hence they have become part of Taiwanese popular modern culture. An unmissable thing to do for every tourist in Taiwan is snacking and walking in its night markets. Some of the best places to experience this are Raohe Night Market, Tamsui Old Street, Fengjia Night Market, and Tonghua or Linjiang Street Night Market. If you want to go to one of the largest, oldest, and most crowded night markets in Taiwan then head to Shilin Night Market. You’ll enjoy a carnival-like atmosphere and find unique creative treats as well. Taichung is justifiably famous for its night market scene, and if you’re intrigued by the markets in this city then you owe it to yourself and Taichung to visit the one that started it all.
